Qualified or Trainee Instructor ? -

  • Qualified ADI's display a GREEN octagonal licence on their car windscreen (as shown below).
  • PDI's are Trainee instructors who display a PINK triangular licence (as shown below) PDI's have not taken the final. qualifying ADI test. ADI's and PDI's MUST if, they are giving paid tuition, display their licence by law.
  • It is an offense to give driving tuition for gain and NOT be a registered ADI or PDI.

  •    adibadge,driving schools in sunderland A Qualified A.D.I. badge.

  •   traineebadge,driving schools in sunderland A Trainee P.D.I. badge.

  • Some driving schools (particularly the larger ones) employ Trainee driving instructors (PDI's) These can be identified by the pink badge in their car windscreen (shown above). Trainee driving instructors usually have less than six months of experience and have not yet passed the final part of the qualifying exam; so their teaching has not been assessed by the Department of Transport.

  • Trainee licences are only usually granted for six months. It could be inconvenient for you if a trainee instructor had to stop teaching you because they had failed to pass the exam within this time...

  • There are 3 parts for Trainee PDI's to pass, the pass rate for part 1 is 52%, so a little over a half of all trainees who attempt part 1 ever get through.
  • Only 42% ever pass part 2, and that only 24% ever pass part 3.
  • So, if we discount those who decided it wasn't for them at the part 1 stage, and we assume that 100 people train for part 2, only 42 of them will pass and go on to part 3. Of those 42, only about 10 will ever qualify and become ADI's. An horrendous figure.
  • So remember NOT ALL trainee P.D.I's will Qualify to become A.D.I.'s
