Test Help - Test Assessment Form DL25 Explained

(What the examiner is LOOKING 4 on the Test)

Examiners are there to assess your driving and this is all it is - an assessment so this is the report form explained, it shows how it should be done but obviously examiners are not after "perfection" so do your best to read and understand and try and apply these things, they will help you know what the examiner is looking for.

Eyesight test
At the start of the test the examiner will ask you to read a number plate from a distance of around 60feet, if you need contacts or glasses wear them! Or the test will not proceed any further.

Precautions
Leaving in gear with the clutch up and starting the engine is common so be careful and make those basic safety checks!

Use of controls
Accelerator - Uncontrolled use / Excessive engine revs
Clutch - Not depressing the clutch pedal before stopping / Uncontrolled engagement after changing gear
Gears - Clutch Coasting / Looking down when changing gear resulting loss of steering control /
Selecting the wrong gear for the road and traffic conditions
Footbrake - Uncontrolled use resulting in pulling up to early or too late / Late or harsh braking / Missing the brake pedal completely
Handbrake - Applying whilst in motion / Not applying where necessary resulting in rolling forwards or backwards / Allowing the vehicle to 'creep' with an automatic / Unable to release fully
Steering - Unable to maintain a steady course in normal driving / under or over steering / At a normal stop, mounting and dismounting the kerb / Not following the contour of the kerb at junctions / Late steering to avoid an obstruction / Failing to correct the steering soon enough after left-right turns / Under and over steering on turns

Move off
No blind area checks / incorrectly timed checks / Moving away unsafely / Blind area check only over the left shoulder / Pulling away with the left signal on.
Under Control - Stalling / Repeated stalling / Moving off with the handbrake applied / Rolling backwards when attempting to move off / moving off in the wrong gear /
Attempting to pull away in too higher gear , these are all too common mistakes and are "BASIC" checks and things you should not do so think don’t be impatient !!!!!!!

Controlled stop
Be alert and react when prompted!
Control - Applying the handbrake before stopping / try to avoid skidding and keep hold of the steering wheel (remember to apply the h/brake and select neutral after stopping. and finally those blind areas all the way round before moving off!

Reversing to the left or right
Poor co-ordination of controls / Stalling / Mounting the pavement or kerb / Going wide after the corner / try not to "touch" the kerb / Time factor i.e. take too long to complete within reason
Observation - No blind area checks / No observation at or before the point of turn / Excessive use of the door mirrors / not looking enough in direction of travel / Not responding to passing or approaching vehicles / observation and not seeing or dealing with pedestrians / Waiting when its safe to proceed with the manoeuvre

The turn in the road
Poor coordination of controls / stalling repeatedly / touching the kerbs too hard / not looking in the direction of travel / moving off without looking effectively / not aware of pedestrians or other road users / taking too much time too complete the manoeuvre. ineffective use of steering i.e. not efficient enough / not controlling the vehicle well enough to turn the vehicle safely

Reverse park
Control - Poor co-ordination of controls / Scrubbing-brushing the kerb / Unnecessary shunting backwards and forwards / Getting too close to the object car / Mounting the pavement
Turning the steering wheel the wrong way / Parking too far from the kerb / Stalling / Not completing within two car lengths / Finishing at an acute angle to the kerb
Car Park - Poor co-ordination of controls / Ending up in two bays / shunting back and forth unnecessarily / Turning the steering wheel the wrong way / Stalling repeatedly
Observation - No blind area checks / Relying too much or entirely on the mirrors / Ineffective observation / Looking but not responding to other vehicles or pedestrians / taking too much time to complete the manoeuvre.

Use of mirrors
Signalling-Changing direction-Stopping / Not using the door mirrors effectively/ Using the mirrors but not acting on what is seen / not making
decisions on the information in the mirrors / sequence ineffective i.e. msm routine not correct order / signalling before mirrors.

Giving appropriate signals
Where necessary - not re-applying when it cancels /no signal where it is necessary
Correctly - Signalling unnecessarily / not cancelling after use
Incorrect (i.e. left for right, right for left) / Flashing the headlights at another driver to proceed or turn / Having the hazard lights on whilst on the move / Unnecessary use of the horn / Beckoning pedestrians / Misleading signal before intended left and right turn
Properly Timed - signal not timed correctly / Arriving at a junction and then signalling / Signalling after starting the manoeuvre / Signalling far too early or too late

Response to signals
Traffic signs - Going to the wrong side of a keep left sign / Not completely stopping at a stop sign /
not complying with a No Entry sign / Driving in a Bus Lane when times on the sign prohibit its use / Not complying with Mandatory signs
Road markings - Unnecessarily crossing the solid white centre lines / Not conforming to directional arrows / Stopping in a yellow box junction when the exit is not clear
Traffic lights - Waiting at a green filter light when safe to proceed / ignoring a red light / Late reaction to the amber traffic light / Remaining at the stop line when safe to move forwards
Traffic controller - Police / Traffic warden / School crossing patrol / Other persons directing traffic
Other road users - reacting late or not at all to other road users signals or reacting when you shouldn’t

Use of speed
Driving too fast / breaking speed limits or not driving at an appropriate speed for the conditions or situation you are in

Following distance
Getting too close to moving vehicles i.e. not keeping the two second rule etc/ Pulling up too close to vehicle ahead and not giving room if they stop

Maintaining progress
Not driving at an appropriate speed for the road and traffic conditions -Holding up following traffic
Avoiding undue hesitation - Stopping unnecessarily at junctions and other hazards / Not proceeding when it is safe to do so at junctions / not getting up to speed efficiently.

Junctions
Approach speed - Approaching too fast / Approaching too slow
Observation - Not taking effective observation before emerging / Looking both ways but still emerging to effect other road users
Turning right - Positioning too far to the left / Positioning too far to the right / On major to minor stopping short of the turning point / Incorrect position before turning right
Turning left - Positioning too far to the right or too close to the kerb / Swinging out / Positioning to turn left inaccurate or markings don’t allow
Cutting Right Corners - Cutting corners, from major to minor roads / observation before turning right .

Judgement
Overtaking - Cutting in after overtaking / Attempting to overtake in a hazardous place / Unsafe overtaking
Judgement when meeting oncoming traffic / not dealing with traffic when priority situations arise

Positioning
Normal driving - Too close to the kerb / Too far from the kerb / On dual carriageways driving in the right hand lane / Cutting across the normal road position when going ahead at roundabouts
Lane discipline - not following lanes correctly and within lines /lanes, "straight lining" roundabouts and not keeping in your lane on the roundabout / not selecting correct lane on approach.

Clearance to obstructions
Not giving adequate clearance to stationary vehicles i.e. car doors width

Pedestrian crossings
Too fast on approach to crossings / Not reacting the lights at a pedestrian controlled crossing / Pulling away well before the crossing is clear of pedestrians / Not stopping when necessary / waving pedestrians across / not anticipating the lights changing.

Position for normal stops
Normal stop not made in a safe position / Both left wheels on the kerb / Over a driveway / At a bus stop / Too far from the kerb / Too near to a junction / Opposite other parked vehicles , parking illegally on road marking etc

Awareness and planning
Failure to plan / anticipate what other road users including pedestrians are going to do, and not acting on the information.

Ancillary controls
Ancillary controls are the controls inside the vehicle i.e. buttons , lights heated screen etc / Failure to use ancillary controls when necessary / Unable to operate controls / Not able to locate or operate essential ancillary controls / Loss of control whilst operating ancillary controls
